A Christmas Memory Analysis

“A Christmas Memory” In “A Christmas Memory”, the time is almost Christmas. One of the characters is nicknamed Buddy, and the other a forty year old. They are friends and they are excited that it is finally the time of the season to bake their fruitcakes. It is the story of two friends that enjoy each other’s company greatly. This story has imagery and mood that sets the feeling for it. Imagery makes ordinary things that are described more interesting to imagine. One that really appealed to my senses was when the two friends are baking their fruitcakes, and the author describes the scene as: “Eggbeaters whirl, spoons spin round in bowls of butter and sugar, vanilla sweetens the air, ginger spices it, melting.” This appealed to my sense of sight because I could see in my mind the ingredients being mixed together. It tells us that it is their last Christmas, and they are sad to leave each other behind. “This is our last Christmas together. Life separates us. Home is where my friend is, and there I never go.” They write letters to each other, updating each other on the goings on where they live. The narrator’s friend also sends her the “best of the batch” when she bakes her fruitcakes once in a while. This is another example of a sad tone and mood. The author of a “Christmas Memory” has very good descriptions throughout the whole story about what the time era and setting looked like. It creates imagery that tells us how he feels as he is remembering a friend he had, and all of the fun and sad times they had together. The characters were sad to see each other go, but they still update each other occasionally.
