A physician’s assistant “practices medicine under the direction of a physician”. They are required to take medical histories, treat and examine patients, make diagnoses, prescribe medicine, assist in surgery, counsel patients, and perform minor procedures.(UW Medicine). Not all of the work is fun, often times PAs are asked to perform awkward diagnostic tests, drain cysts, and examine uncomfortable parts of the body. In the medical field a professional, such as a physician’s assistant, sees a large range of people, conditions, and incidents, each situation, despite how discomforting they might be, provides a sense of excitement. "Most importantly, the happiest job is the one that you find personally fulfilling, challenging, and matches your personality," (Worth). The long list of duties appeals to my personal desire for a job that gets one off of their butt and teaches the practitioner something new every day. I have trouble focusing throuout long intervals. I have a self-prescribed condition wherein sitting for long periods of time limits my ability to think or care. And if I am not challenged frequently I become complacent. On average a PAs salary is around ninety-eight-thousand a year. (Bureau of Labor Statistics). For some aspiring PAs this could be the driving force for choosing such a specialization. And I am no exception, In all honesty when researching professions pay is the first aspect I considered. There are two explanations for my personal desire for money. First I am greedy, I would not mind having a nice set of wheels and occasionally cruising around in my yacht. The second explanation is the result of a mixed sense of guilt and desire. The people with more money are more capable to help those in need. I believe that as a human in this world it is your duty to serve those around you. While it is enjoyable having nice things it is difficult to enjoy materialistic goods when there are those lacking essentials. In addition, the act of performing service gives a satisfying sense of pleasure which promotes the desire to continue in service.
