She decided to come to America because she wanted freedom, somewhere she could live without anyone forcing her to do something she didn’t want to do. By coming to America when she did, Salado escaped an arranged marriage in Kenya. She also wanted a place to call home, and her own. Her parents had their home in Kenya, but they are well aware that they may be asked to leave the country at any time. Her first week after coming to America, Salado found a job in Alabama. She ended up becoming ill from not eating, and she was actually fired from her first job because she fainted while working. She was worried about how she was going to get back on her feet after not being able to find a job in Alabama. She met a new friend through Facebook that lived in Chicago but when she thought about moving there she didn’t because she was afraid of moving there. The friend had a cousin that lived in Minnesota that was willing to help her out, picking her up from the airport and helping house her for the next few weeks through the cousin’s friends in Minneapolis.
