I teach 8th grade math with 120 students. I have one inclusion class with a special education teacher. One of my major issues I have with my students is that at least 25% of them will not turn in homework. This causes an issue with the students not mastering the standard I’m teaching at that time; therefore, when I move on, which I have to because of time constraints, they are falling behind. There are many students who come to me in 8th grade who are not prepared, especially with the implementation of common core standards. According to their previous year PARCC scores, at least 40% are at a level 1 or 2.

There are many sources as to why students may not do their homework, such as: not understanding the concept, no one to help at

In his article for “The Atlantic Monthly”, Jonathan Rauch asserts that homework would have a significant impact on the quality of graduating students. His position of increasing homework and the amount of time spent studying outside of the classroom is well supported by both school administrators and an educational psychologist. Jonathan Rauch also points out that schools can make adjustments to their programs of instruction, but cannot do so without protest from either parents or the students. He shows that the children in the United States are lazy and parents could do more for them instead of relying on the school. Parents complain about how the schools instruct and when they try to change.…

A counter argument may be that non-LD students are classified as LD, but in actuality are just are lazy and do not put forth an effort. That is not always the case. It has been proven that this is not true. There was a research where LD students that were recognized by the school as LD were compared to non-LD students who were not recognized. Although the scores were similar, forty percent of the students had a possibility of being classified incorrectly.…

As an only child growing up in Clarence, Iowa, I at most times found myself playing alone in my backyard or sitting in front of my television, watching whatever we had on VCR. DVD players had already been out for years at that time, but with my father working as a mechanic in some random guy's garage, we could not afford to buy a DVD player. I had to resort to VHS tapes, but at least my mother would take me to the used game store(which also sold VHS tapes and DVDs)every once in a while. I became addicted to owning VHS tapes, even as a six year old boy and honestly, I still am to this day. My favorites were the movies from Tim Burton and the Disney films were my absolute favorites; I just could not get enough of Toy Story and The Lion King.…

When I was young I lived in rural orcas island. My school was small and I never had anyone to inspire me to something like programming or computer science. I wish that there had been someone like that because during high school I used to think that I was not smart enough for anything besides being a graphic artist. I attribute this to a horrible high school math experience, and my near constant presence at Art club, which took most of my after school time. In addition the running start classes that I took during junior and senior year of high school were online only, which combined horribly with a lack of confidence in my academic ability.…

I judge that we can all agree that homework is fairly boring and is not interesting. Students do not want to learn or work on something that doesn’t interest them. Also, they may not understand the concept of the topic, so they find it difficult and confusing. Some students lack time management and may have their priorities mixed up. Both of these flaws can interfere with the organization to do homework.…

Academic Cheating Statistics show that cheating among high school students has risen dramatically during the past 50 years (Cheating Fact Sheet). The cheating that goes on in schools has increased greatly due to students having stressful, time consuming jobs, what seems like neverending sports, or they may just be plain, old lazy. Students find themselves stuck in a pit often times with no clue what to do and in that case it is very easy to take someone else’s paper and write down their answers without them having do the slightest bit of thinking. Jobs are a really easy and understandable excuse for a lot of students. From going to your job right after school or after a sports practice up until late at night, often times it is really difficult…
