5-Iodosalicylamide

Decent Essays
The purpose of this lab was to iodonize salicylamide and characterize the product in order to determine its structure. The crude product of this reaction was recrystallized using ethanol. The white crystalline product was isolated using vacuum filtration and characterized. The percent yield of this reaction was determined to be 39%. The observed experimental melting point of the product was determined to be 235-137 oC. When compared to the literature melting point 228 oC of the predicted product, 5-iodosalicylamide, it can be concluded that the product is very pure. Infrared spectroscopy revealed three peaks at frequencies ~1650 cm-1, 3196-3333 cm-1, and 3439 cm-1. Those peaks indicate the presence of an amide, amine, and an alcohol, respectively.

MDMA, Molly or Ecstasy, but legally known as Methlysafrylaminc - these are all the same drug. In 1912 this, now illicit substance, was originally developed by a German pharmaceutical company to control bleeding. Some say that it has medical use, while others completely disagree. In the late 1970’s and early 1980’s MDMA had gained a huge following with psychiatrist saying that the drug “enhanced communication” and “opened insights to patients about their problems.…

Respectively, the known/unknown were reacted with HCl, NaOH, NaCl, CaCO3, and HNO3 and AgNO3. With the results lining up between the known and the unknown, more properties were identified and more evidence for a positive identification. The five reactions that were carried out further validated our conclusion, since the results were the same between the unknown and the known. For the four that did not react with the unknown, nor did they react with the hypothesized compound, validating the conclusion.…

N-Isopropylnoratropine is a noratropine derivative and an intermediate in the production of ipratropium, an atropine-like bronchodilator drug via an anticholinergic pathway. N-Isopropylnoratropine is used to examine the stability of ipratropium [1]. Muscarinic acetylcholine receptors are acetylcholine receptors that form G protein-receptor complexes in the cell membranes of certain neurons and other cells. N-Isopropylnoratropine is an intermediate in the production of ipratropium and used to examine the stability of ipratropium. Ipratropium exhibits broncholytic action by reducing the influence of cholinergic on the bronchial musculature.…

The amine was initially classified as 4’-aminoacetophenone from the melting point. An experimental melting point of 101.4-104.8 C was determined for the amine component and was closer to 103-107 C melting point for 4’-aminoacetophenone provided in the Lab Guide. This melting point determination was also very close to the 3’-aminoacetophenone melting point range (94-98 C), therefore a 1H NMR was taken as well to confirm the components classification. From the NMR it was determined that the compound was 4’-aminoacetophenone since only a para substituted aromatic ring could produce two doublets, as is shown on the 1H NMR. 3’-aminoacetophenone would have projected a singlet, two doublets, and a triplet for the aromatic region which was not present in the 1H NMR.…

The sequence of the reactions employed for the construction of novel indole–benzimidazole-based 1,2,3-triazole hybrids is demonstrated in Scheme 1. Compound 2 was prepared by treating propargyl bromide with 1H-indole-3-carbaldehyde (1) in presence of potassium carbonate in dry acetone at reflux temperature [26]. Compound 2 was further reacted by heating at reflux temperature with o-phenylenediamine (OPDA) in chloroform for 6 h afforded compound 3. Compound 3 coupled with variously substituted azides by Azide-Alkyne Cycloaddition reaction to afford title compounds 4a–j. The variously substituted azides were achieved according to the literature procedure [27,28]. In order to develop a high yield synthetic protocol for the synthesis of title compounds…

In Silicon Valley, California a massive improvement in crime fighting in taking place in the form of a security guard robot named K5 that was designed by a company named Knightscope. The video on business insider demonstrated just what this bit is capable of when it comes to its crime reducing abilities. One of the most positive actions performed by K5 was when it was shown to be able to detect things like theft and violence and contact the authorities as soon as it detected one of those instances. This is positive for a couple of reasons, the first one being that these robots provide more “eyes” to detect crime instead of just relying on people who may not always be on the alert and as such would not be able to detect any criminal activity as well as these robots can.…

Ipecac syrup is an emetic that patients with bulimia nervosa may ingest to induce vomiting; small, chronic doses have caused cumulative, fatal toxicity in a few patients [106]. Although it is no longer available over the counter or as a prescription drug in several countries, it appears that it is possible to obtain the drug through internet purchases [121]. One component of ipecac is emetine, which accumulates in cardiac muscle cells and is toxic. Signs and symptoms of cardiotoxicity include precordial chest pain, dyspnea, hypotension, prolonged QT, pulmonary congestion, and cardiac arrest [121]. Chronic use damages muscle cells including the myocardium, that could lead to cardiomyopathy which may be irreversible [110].…

Abstract: The objective of this experiment was to synthesize aspirin from salicylic acid and acetic anhydride. The general theory behind this experiment was to study the synthesis of a drug from organic materials. During the experiment, esterification had occurred between reactants salicylic acid and acetic anhydride. Then, phosphoric acid would catalyze the reaction and water would be added to decompose the remaining acetic anhydride. Through the process of filtration, aspirin crystals were collected and separate from the liquid acetic acid-water solution.…
