The School counselor knows, understands and adheres to current ethical and professional standards and legal requirements.
The school counselor has an obligation to be informed as well as knowledgeable about guidelines that have to be executed from a guidance and an institutional point of view. The school and the counselor go the extra mile to ensure this information is outlined as a part of the handbook. Also, when it comes to certain topics, the counselor has to let parents know that they intend to work with their child during the school year by providing them with an informed consent. Ethical standards are required for the counseling profession as well as other professions, because very expeditiously, things can go wrong and a lot of times a new way of performing a service, or handling an issue may not have been dealt with, which means the counselor may be paving the way for others. With that being said, the guidelines a counselor follows should appeal to all and not a select few. This article makes reference to the possibility of the counselor aiding students and lending his/her attention to the students only who will excel. Our code of ethics discourages such behavior, there are standards that forbid the counselor have dual roles, to favor one student over the other and to assist with not letting your roles become blurred in the instance you are called on to be more than a counselor. For instance, attending special events if requested by a student that does not have anything to do with school, or getting involved with students are clients intimately.
