Merle Haggard was a very important figure in the country music genre in the late sixties, up until the mid-eighties. Haggard Was an ex-con whose best friend was executed when they were in prison which impacted him greatly and caused him to change his way of life. While Haggard was in prison he learned how to impersonate other famous country music singers, such as Johnny Cash who played a show at the prison Haggard was in. In Prison Haggard began his career, he played in the prison country band and played by himself. When he was released on parole in 1960 he began singing at bars and in 1963 he was signed, and his first song was a national #1 Hit, “Strangers”. After Haggards career was underway, he released his album Mama Tried in 1968 which includes the song, “Mama Tried”. The song “Mama Tried” was very popular because it was able to travel across genre lines and appealed to everyone. Shakur also shows his Ethos by having a music video for the song, which requires a lot of money, time, and effort. Tupac has an obvious ethos because he already was one of the greatest rap artists of all time, as well as his previous record, “ Strictly 4 My N.I.G.G.A.Z...” which went platinum. The final way that this song shows Tupac’s ethos is because it proves that he has already had success because it is very different from his previous “gangsta rap” songs which were a very popular style at the time, talking about his mother would weaken Tupac’s image of a hardcore
