A 39 year old man by the name of Winston Smith is a part of the Outer party. Oceania has three social classes: the Inner Party, the Outer Party, and the Proles. There are four ministries that the government is divided into: the Ministry of Truth, the Ministry of Peace, the Ministry of Love, and the Ministry of Plenty. Winston writes in his diary about what had occurred that day and his thoughts about it, but is afraid that the Thought Police will find the journal he is writing in.
Winston hears a knock at the door of his apartment and he thinks it is all over for him, but it is only his neighbor’s wife, ranting about her kitchen sink. The Junior Spies of Mrs. Parsons comes into the room and begins to yell at Winston, accusing him of being

During lunchtime, he meets up with a comrade and they discuss the dictionary that Syme was working on. In the 11th edition of the dictionary, they are destroying hundreds of words. Later, Winston writes in his diary about a prole prostitute he was with a few years ago to try and alleviate some of his anger, but he remembers about his wife, whom separated with him about eleven years ago.

Winston believes that the proles are the ones who have the ability to overthrow the Party, due to the fact they make-up 85% of Oceania’s population. He takes a walk around prole district and he talks to Mr. Charrington who is the owner of the place where Winston bought the diary. He ends up buying a clear glass paperweight, with pink coral in the center of it. Winston heads back to his apartment and he spots the dark-haired girl in blue Party overalls and he believes she has been spying on

He believes he killed her and he tells a sleepy Julia about his dream. Julia and Winston debate with each other that staying in the rented room will increase the possibility of getting caught by members of the Party, but they can’t muster up the will to leave. The day arrives and Julia and Winston shows up at O’Brien’s place separately and the both of them confess that they are against the Party.

Winston attains Goldstein’s book, and while reading the book, he discovers the true meaning of the phrase “War is peace.” Julia comes into the room and Winston reads the book to her until she falls asleep. The both of them awake from their slumber and begin talking, but they hear another voice coming from a telescreen in the room. Mr. Charrington turns out to be a part of the Thought Police.

After Winston is captured by the Thought Police, he is thrown into a cell that contains other prisoners, including his neighbor, Mr. Parsons. Winston endures multiple torture sessions and tries to convince himself that O’Brien isn’t the source of pain. O’Brien reveals to Winston, after weeks of interrogation and pain, that the Party can control what is in the human
