This lack of fresh water may of made the colonists hesitant to trade with the natives due to them not having enough resources in general, because the colonists could not farm or even survive with the little amount of resources that the colony had. Also, Francis West and his men went on a trading trip to the nearby indians to trade, however instead of trading, the men killed the two of the indians and stole their grains (Doc D). These actions by West and his men caused the natives to be more hostile towards the other colonists and would not trade with them in the future. Furthermore, there were 7 colonists casualties due to indians attacks in the first couple of years at Jamestown, 1607 and 1608 (Doc E). This was the start of the war between the two…
I am going to explain to you two of the groups that involves the cultural and economic responses towards the Indians of North America before 1750. I will be explaining to you about the British and the French. Before 1750, The French helped out the Native Americans economically and culturally. Before 1750, The French helped them out economically. When the French first came to America they approached the Native Americans, in a cruel and a unjust manner.…
Alan Abraham 10/4/16 2A Nelson DBQ To what extent had the colonists developed a sense of their identity and unity as Americans by the eve of the Revolutions?…
Document Based Question 1 The colonization of North America was a major turning point in the history of the world, and one that will never be forgotten. Many Europeans sailed to the New World to establish new settlements in the Americas, in order for economic gain for themselves as well as their home nations. Although some will argue that the colonization of North America during the 17th century was based on religion, it was truly facilitated by greed and a desire for riches. The major reason for colonization was weath for the mother countries.…
Colonists of North America left England because of the corrupt government, need for natural rights, and a better society. Due to these injustices they were able to establish a successful society. They arrived on the Mayflower, containing 102 people,58 who died within a year. When they reached Cape Cod 41 men signed the Mayflower Compact, swearing that they would spread Puritanism and devote themselves to the good of their new colony. Although they were not planning on going to cape cod, they settled there anyway because it was outside the Virginia company and there was open land and an ocean for fishing.…
Because of the different values both the Indians and the English colonists held, it is not as convincing to believe Indians gained trade that was useful to them or if the English colonists payed fairly due to no factual or even theoretical evidence. Bushnell states, “and one consequence of this relation was that the trade and tended to merge together. The best examples of the process are to be found among the sachems themselves” (Bushnell, 1953, pg 202). Since their processes of trade were only to be based off the memory of the sachems it limits the article to prove whether these trades actually…
The Spanish, French, and Dutch colonies in North America all interacted with the Native Americans during the 16th century. Spain’s extreme subjugating approach and views on freedom and religion differed from the accepting and collaborative views of the French and the Dutch. Although the French and Dutch had apparent positive approaches compared to Spain, oppression of the Native Americans occurred under the control of all three colonies. The Spanish were the first to colonize North America and their approach lacked moral compass.…
By the 1700s, the New England and the Chesapeake regions developed into two different colonies due to each colony’s reason for settlement, consisting of religious and economic reasons, their personal beliefs, and their growth in their society. While the settlers of New England immigrated to the Americas to escape religious persecution, the settlers of the Chesapeake region immigrated for more economic reasons—the search of gold. Each colony’s way of life contrasted from one another in the way they lived in their societal systems. The impacts of these differences evolved the colonies uniquely. Documents A and D reveal the religious motivations behind the New England settlers’ settlements.…
Since a major reason for the English coming to the U.S. was for trade, John Smith and the other colonists had a deceitful strategy for trading with the Indians. “Smith said, in effect, that he did not care if they did not want to trade: if they would not give him corn in exchange for the trinkets he chose to give them, he would just take it and call it his revenge for their having allowed him to be captured in their territory the previous year.” The colonists devised the perfect plan. Give the indians useless trinkets, in exchange for all the corn they could eat. The greedy colonists just wanted to take all of what the indians had, and give anything back, knowing that corn was the Indians major source of food.…
After Columbus ' discovery of the Americas, Spain reaped the benefits of this New World. More than a century later, Europeans finally took an interest in establishing colonies in North America. King James I of England established Jamestown, made up of men from the Virginia Company, in Virginia in 1607. Soon after, England established several new colonies along the Atlantic Coast. While Spain and British colonization efforts both began with the goal of finding new wealth, they differed in their religious aspects and their treatment of the native people.…

In the early 17th century two major British colonies were formed in North America, Jamestown and Massachusetts Bay. While the Massachusetts Bay colony was identified as being primarily Puritan, the Jamestown colony was mostly Church of England. The Massachusetts Bay colony members were mostly working folks, and had more of a communal work ethic. The Jamestown colony was entrepreneurs, and had problems initially because the colonists were often wealthy Englishmen and were unwilling to work. Obviously these colonies are very different from each other.…
Jamestown and Massachusetts Bay Colony both had great impacts for the thirteen colonies. Jamestown was the first surviving settlement for the English in the Americas. Jamestown’s survival caused more settlers to come to the Americas in the belief that they too could survive. The Puritans of Massachusetts Bay colony believed only Puritans should have a “voice” over the colony. Non-puritans left Massachusetts to start a new colony because they didn’t want to be pressured to follow the beliefs of the Puritans.…
Interactions between Europeans and Native Americans While attempting to find a faster route to the Indies, Christopher Columbus discovered another land instead. Since the English, French and Spanish were all seeking power at the time that same land would soon after be explored. As the news of the discovery spread, the English shortly found power in the acquisition of the land itself, the French in fur trade, and the Spanish in conquering and exploiting the Native Americans that originally inhabited the area. During the process of fulfilling their achievements, each European had different approaches and distinct encounters with the local Native Americans. The English initially had friendly relationships with them, but with time and trade, hostility…
The Colonists and Native Americans The relationship between the Colonists and Native Americans was a rocky one to say the least. Often times the focus of American history revolves around the war for independence and the beginning of the American government, but in reality American history began much sooner. Native Americans and early Colonists had once hoped to work together and mutually benefit one another, one can clearly see that this did not work. History shows us how and if violence could have been avoided, what the main causes of conflict were, and which party appeared to be most at fault. One thought provoking question that could be asked is whether violence could have been avoided, or if it was imminent.…
