“12 Years a Slave” may not be the first movie made about slavery, but it sure was the one that stopped American cinema from selling lies on this topic, which they had been doing for over a century now . “12 Years a Slave” is a slave narrative directed by Steve McQueen. A slave narrative is a literary form that grew out of the written accounts of enslaved Africans. Naomi Zack in her book “Thinking about Race”, states that “Race, and the idea the word stands for have meant very different things throughout the Western Europe and American History.”(Zack, 7). The concept of race has played a very durable role in the way Americans think about it. Race has continued to lure a lot of people into this wrong belief that American involvement in race related …show more content…
He is kidnapped in 1841 and sold into slavery in the south – which back in the days was a very common thing. Solomon has his past, his identity and his humanity taken away from him, he is renamed "Platt" by his slave owners. We follow his dreadful journey as a slave which starts when he is sold to a plantation owner, who has a comparatively kind and understanding behavior which contradicts his slave owner status, but after experiencing the rage of a brutal and cruel farmhand, "Platt" is sold to Edwin Epps, a hot-headed man of border line psychotic behavior whose craving for a young slave girl seems to be dragging him into an abyss of uncontainable …show more content…
It can also be viewed as a flawlessly organized movie that makes you think about the choices the slaves had to make in order to live, which included complete submission to their master’s wishes. On broader picture “12 Years a Slave” reveals the American history of slavery, image by image, and shows it as a system and destroys all its myths, and lies about lovable masters and happy slaves. This movie has no messages or final-act synopses or talks. Mr. McQueen’s method is more actual and rebellious mainly because of its old-fashioned, Hollywood-style

There is a common accepted historical narrative that portrays the antebellum era as one fraught with prominent, white figures who owned slaves who were subservient and complacent. This commonly accepted notion of what slavery was like depicts slaves as individuals who simply accepted their fate and did not opt to exercise any form of agency. This notion that slaves did not try to actively resist the confines of slavery is untrue and is illustrated by the work Kindred by Octavia Butler, Black Thunder by Arna Bontemps, and Django Unchained directed by Quentin Tarantino. These creative works of historical fiction do accurately represent how slaves were treated but also, perhaps more important how slaves resisted such unjust treatment. The three aforementioned pieces were all created at different period of time.…

Throughout the book, The Narrative Of The Life Of Frederick Douglass, an American Slave, and the movie, 12 Years a Slave, we see many ways in which masters, overseers, and owners inhumanely manipulate their slaves, and how Solomon and Frederick resist. Within the centuries of slavery in the United States from 1619 to 1865 dehumanization took a huge toll on American slave’s lives, “For the African Americans, slavery reduced them into poverty and products by dehumanizing them from their ability to be considered actual people” (Capstick 1). Throughout slavery slaves were so low in social class that they were thought of as property, not humans. Over time we see Frederick and Solomon adapt to their surroundings by finding and creating ways to resist…

“But remember, there are two ways to dehumanize someone: by dismissing them, and by idolizing them.” This quote, attributed to David Wong, sums up the difference between the book Twelve Years a Slave from its film counterpart. Characters and situations that Solomon Northrup wrote down were altered in the making of the film, and by dismissing some people as villains and idolizing others as angels, the filmmakers dehumanize both the slaves and their owners. Changes to the material made by the film creators in an effort to make the film more entertaining changed important aspects of the story, and did not further the truth of the story.…

Kevin shows the reader the problem of narrating from such an outside standpoint, and Dana highlight the issue of being black and too “knowledgeable” about history, without understanding the reality of what it meant to be a slave. As both character’s knowledge is filtered through their 1976 ontologies and flawed, incomplete history lessons; what the two protagonists believe they know about the past does not hold up when they are confronted with it. As they live through history, they are able to find the flaws in contemporary historical characterizations of enslaved blacks and the institution of slavery itself. Kevin represents the problematic mindset of minimizing the dehumanizing aspects of slavery that are not directly related to physical violence. The novel’s version of slavery stresses the way underhanded tactics such as forcing blacks to watch others be beaten and breaking up families was as violent and, in some ways, more damaging than physical violence.…

Since the release of “Lincoln” in 2012, Steven Spielberg has been under heavy fire regarding the discrepancies in his film. Kate Masur, a professor of history at Northwestern, argues that his film is,“Inaccurate, damaging, and difficult to dislodge”, because it, “underemphasized the role of African Americans” in the abolishment of slavery. Through the viewpoint of Masur, she believes that Spielberg inaccurately interpreted that only, “White men alone were the authors of abolition.” Although he is an artist and director, it is still quite ironic that the cause of which the Union is fighting for in the film isn’t portrayed in this film. While many side with Kate Masur, others depict Lincoln differently.…

Why is it important to document hidden histories? Before viewing Slavery by Another Name (2012), I was not fully aware of the atrocities committed against African Americans after slavery had been abolished. I knew that newly freed slaves had a hard time adjusting to freedom, but I never fathomed the oppression and torment they were subjected to as free Americans. My history classes throughout my education never included information regarding involuntary servitude and laws that were created to deliberately re-enslave African Americans and prevent them from having mobility.…

Both Twelve Years a Slave and Lincoln helped shed light on the conditions, attitudes and beliefs surrounding slavery in mid-1800’s America. What was unique about both movies; however, was the way the directors choose to portray how slavery was interpreted through their respective points in American history, and the unique perspectives from which slavery was looked upon. While obviously the most noticeable difference is seen through the choosing of the main protagonist and the time period, Salmon Northrup an African American in the early 1840’s whose journey takes place over a 12 year period in 12 Years a Slave, and President Abraham Lincoln from January through April 1865 in Lincoln, the truly substantial differences arise from the political…
