Robert Washington, Andrew Jackson, B.J. Carson, and Tyrone Mills were in the car (Page 2). Gerald Nickelby stayed behind because his dad is strict and he would get in trouble if he didn’t go straight home. He said, “I got to be gettin’ home. And my old man … you know how he is …” (Page 5). Andy was driving and he made it out of the car with Tyrone’s help. Tyrone was sitting behind Andy and rolled out of the car. B.J. was sitting next to Tyrone in the back. B.J. crawled out of the car. Rob was sitting beside Andy in the front seat with his feet on the dashboard. After the car hit the wall, Rob couldn’t open the door and he got stuck. The gas tank exploded and Rob burned to death (Page 13). Tyrone and Rob were close friends when they met Andy, …show more content…
In the conversation with his basketball coach he says, “I wanted to die right after the accident. I wanted it to be me that was dead instead of Rob,” (Page 24). Later in that section he also wished that he would’ve gotten a worse punishment so that he would’ve had to suffer.

How did the accident affect B.J? What changes did he make because of the accident? What did he think people would say about his choice? The accident made B.J. think a lot more. He started praying and made the decision to go to church on Sunday as well. In the prayer he asked why it had to be Rob that died and not him. He thinks that he should have been driving since he had not been drinking. When he says that he decided to go to church he thinks that other people will think he only came because of the accident. He writes, “I know people will say that it’s because of the accident that I came back to church—well, they’re right,” (Page 17).

He thinks that he should’ve been punished worse so that he would’ve had to suffer more. His coach responds by telling him to stop blaming himself and explaining that some parts were things Andy couldn’t control. Andy says, “I think I would’ve felt better if I woulda had to suffer and complain a little.” His coach responds with, “You are suffering, Andy,” (Page 27). His coach wants him to stop blaming himself because the accident was in the past and know there is nothing Andy can do about it.

What three things did Gerald say he would change in the world if he could? Why do you think he responded in such a trivial manner? Gerald said if he could change the world he would get rid of peanut butter, Band-Aids, and five-dollar bills (Page 33). I think he responded in such a trivial manner because he didn’t want to make a big deal out of himself. He is probably scared because of what his dad does and doesn’t want to be noticed. Like with the Band-Aids, he doesn’t want to draw attention to himself.

Describe the first basketball game after the accident. Describe Andy’s and Rob’s parents’ participation and feelings about basketball

Tim Pegler, the author of ‘Five Parts Dead’, demonstrates that people will take responsibility for disastrous circumstances, despite it being out of their control. This may be because they have taken part in an ill-advised act as shown with the character Dan. Pegler explores the themes of guilt, grief and isolation and how individuals deal with the loss of someone important and the consequences of their mistake. Dan lost his friends, and he blames himself because he thinks he could have prevented it.
