• Vocabulary instruction is needed because as students progress while reading, the come upon hundreds to thousands of unfamiliar words. Despite being designated for younger readers, some books contain a lot of advanced vocabulary words. This abundance of advanced vocabulary words within a text may cause students to struggle to read, but vocabulary instruction can allow students to gain more knowledge that they can build upon, as well as provide students with strategies for figuring out words.

Then, I would encourage the students to use contextual analysis to make sure the word is a real word that fits the context. However, if the word is unknown, I would encourage the students to use morphemic analysis and context to determine the word’s meaning. If none of the applied strategies allowed the students to understand the meaning of the word or if the students wanted to double-check their conceived meaning, I would suggest to the students to use a dictionary or glossary to either discover the meaning or check the meaning they discovered through contextual analysis.
