What is the Canadian Immigration Points System?
The points system involves only economic immigrants who wish to come to Canada. Dating from 1967, the points system gathers criteria on their skills and work experience, nd if they have a certain amount of points, they can try in immigrate to Canada.
Why are health factors important in Immigration?
Health is taken in to account in order to protect the health of Canadian citizens. Steps are also taken to ensure hat society is not endangered and that excessive demand is not put on the health care system.
What is the Singh Descision?
In 1985, under the 1976 Immigration Act, a man seeking refugee status from India was rejected under the act, and the case was brought to Supreme Court, which resulted in an over ruling.
Immigration and Refugee Protection Act, 2002
An act that lays out the main rules for immigration to Canada. The Act lists out the four main categories of immigration and the objectives they seek to accomplish.
Economic Immigrants
Skilled Workers and business people who wish to come and work in Canada
Refugees
People who have come to escape imprisonment or death in an unsolitary country.
Family Class
People who have come with family members living in Canada already.
Other
People accepted because of humanitarian reasons or natural disasters.
What is the Provincial Nomination Program
Under the program, provinces can nominate, or select a percentage of the Immigrants coming to Canada each year. It increases the likelihood that they will settle in places that match their skills in labour.
Canada/Quebec Accord
A specific agreement with Quebec. Quebec can nominate the percentage of immigrants to Canada that corresponds to its population within Canada. Quebec mainly seeks out immigrants whose first language is French.
Scarcity
Scarcity occurs when the demand for a product is so high that resources needed for it become low.
Land Factor
The materials needed to make products that come from the natural environment.
Labour Factor
The physical effort needed to make these products or to put goods and services to action.
Capital Factor
The money needed to buy equipment that produce these goods and services.
What is the difference between private owned and public owned?
Publicly Owned means that products and goods are controlled by the government, while privately owned means that goods and services are operated by businesses and individuals.
Planned Economy
A planned economy is an economic system in which the government has all control in the structure of the economy. They decide what products are sold, what materials they are made of, and who makes the products.
Mixed Ecomony
A type of economy where private businesses own some resources while the government owns others.
Market Economy
A type of economy where the private businesses mainly control the economy and resources. Government can intervene in order to maintain competition between businesses.
What are Crown Corporations?
Crown Corporations, like Petro Canada, are companies owned and operated the Canadian Government in order to provide citizens with the goods and services they need.
Why do governments intervene in market economies?
Governments can intervene in a market economy in order to maintain a level of competition. Competiton is key to the success of the economy, and competition ensures that citizens have a choice when they buy their products. Market Economies rely on the producers and consumers.
Role of the Consumer
It is the consumers role to choose what he/she wants to purchase. The more demand there is by consumers, the more money is made by certain companies. This helps to maintain a good market economy.
Why are labour unions important?
Labour unions are unions of workers that help to represent the needs and conditioning of the employees.They work to represent the worker`s rights and interests.Labour Laws allow employees to form Unions.
How does Marketing affect sonsumer behaviour?
There are ads for products all around us. They describe what a product is and they describe why we should go out and buy it. They may present us with information about the product and why its beneficial or what it can do for us.
How do choices affect our identity?
Our idenitities represent who we are today. This can be represented by the clothes we wear, the food we eat, the music we listen to, whats sports teams we like,etc. Buying products can say a lot about who we are as Canadians.
Health and Safety Factors
Certain products, such as cigarettes or engergy drinks, may contain health warnings that describe how products are dangerous to health. This is done to maintain the safety and well being of Canadian citizens. However, citizens can still buy these products easily.
Jobs Factor
When we buy products, we connect to a chain of people who have made it possible to purchase these products. This includes people who made the materials for it, people who delivered it, and people who ensure its sale.
Why does the environment play a large role?
The air is affected when we make purchases, because the certain products we buy come from the land, and they can pollute the land. Cars use gasoline, so they can pollute the earth. Making certain materials can also release certain toxins in to the air.
Legislation about the envirionment.
Canada and U.S. both have legislation that prohibits leaded gasoline because of the harmful affects on humans and the environment. Both countries also have many energy efficient appliances avaliable for purchase.

Both Canada and the U.S. have legislation that says what ads can and can`t say. Ads cannot make misleading or false claims about the products can do. These rules fall under the Competition Act
What is GDP
GDP stands for Gross Domestic Product per capita. It measures the amount of wealth that a country`s economy generates. Per capita means, per person.
How can consumerism empower groups.
Boycotts are decisions by certain groups of consumers who agree not to buy specific products, mainly in protest. For example, Greenpeace members boycotting the sale of oil dug up from the oil sands.
Who pays for Canada`s social programs?
Canadian citizens pay for many social programs and services through their taxes. The government then puts the taxes in to these services, and then offers them to the Canadian citizens.
What is public health care?
Public health care is a form of health care that is paid for by the taxes that hundreds of people pay. Canada has a public health care system, meaning Canadians pay taxes that go to Health Care.
What is private health care?
Private Health care means that individual citizens cover the costs of their own medical needs. The U.S. has a private health care system, which is more like a business and for a profit.
Why do people buy Health Insurance?
In the U.S., hundreds of people buy health insurance to cover the cost of their medical needs and bills.They pay money to a company on a regular basis whether they are sick or not. The prices are usually more than they are willing to pay.
What else do our Taxes pay for?
Our taxes pay for many social programs across Canada, This includes health care, pensions for senior citizens, education, affordable housing, child protection, etc.
Pensions for Seniors
People who are over age 65 and have lived in Canada for more than 10 years can recieve a monthly pension, paid for by the taxes.
Can anyone get tax-covered care in the U.S?
People who recieve low family incomes can recieve health care provided by the U.S. government if they can`t pay it themselves.
Issues of public health care
Public health care, as well as many programs, are paid by the taxes of many Canadian citizens. These taxes can be very costly to citizens, however, it does go to ensuring that Canada has a stable health care system for people who need it.

Many people have different opinions on what type of health care is the best. Public health care is covered the taxes paid by all Canadian citizens but the taxes paid can be high. Private health care operates somewhat like a business, however, people who recieve lower incomes may have serious problems paying for health care when they need.

A part of the underground economy, tax evasion occurs when an individual or group does not inform the government about how much money they have, so essentially they avoid paying taxes.

Income Tax is based on how much money you make on income. The more income to make, the higher income tax to pay to the government.

The government taxes all the economic activity in a country called the Tax Base. These taxes pay for our services.
Why our views on the oil sands different?
There are many people who believe that the oil sands should be in full production, and others want to shut it down. The oil sands produces at leat a million barrels of oil a day, but this can create tons of Greenhouse Gases. The money made from the oil sale to the U.S. also goes to paying for many social services.
Alberta`s GHG emision
Alberta is among the leaders of Canada in the amount of GHGs produced by the oil sands. There is much work done on the oil sands, and this results in large pollution by those companies. However, Alberta is one of the leaders in Canada in terms of GDP.
How can reducing GHG affect quality of life.
There are thousands of people who work in companies that produce GHG, especially the oil sands. If production of oil is slowed, it could result in the loss of hundreds of jobs, jobs that people had been doing their whole life and through generations.
How does production of oil affect Canadians?
Gasoline that is used by Canadians to drive their cars is taken out of oil dug from the oil sands. Also, money made from the sale of oil generates much wealth for the economy, which leads to the purchase of goods and services. If there was no oil, then Canadians would br stuck, and Canada would start losing the money they worked hard for.
