I am M. Patricia Cifuentes, a postdoctoral researcher at Ohio State University, appointed by the College of Public Health and Biomedical Informatics. I am an MD specialized in statistics with a doctoral degree on Public Health. I contact you to share some research ideas I propose in the context of my application to the Yerby postdoctoral fellowship program for which I suggested you as faculty mentors. The proposal I presented consists on developing theory-based and data-driven models of health complexity for contributing to the health theoretical development, providing coherence and context to fragmented evidence of health practice, and bringing closer health theory and facts. I briefly described this proposal in my application according to supplemental questions made by the program. The proposal is framed by formulations of health theories which assemble the health´s body of knowledge. Therefore, Ecosocial theory formulated by Dr. Krieger is a keystone as it addresses diverse issues of health complexity. As the development of scientific theories relies on…
A Modest Proposal by Johnathan Swift is a satirical essay, in which Swift gives a detailed over the top explanation for how to deal with the poor Irish. When Swift wrote this essay, fully titled “A Modest Proposal for Preventing the Children of Poor People from Being a Burthen to their Parents, or the Country, and for Making them Beneficial to the Publick”, there were many others who were writing pamphlets on how to deal with the growing poverty rate in Britain at the time. Swift used over the…
Journal Example on “A Modest Proposal”, by Jonathan Swift Style: Swift’s use of Satire to Drive his Point Swift’s use of satire is what truly makes his message so powerful. I can imagine that there were many do-gooders at the time breathlessly trying to convince the greedy British government that they need to act at solving the humanitarian crisis in Ireland, but that none likely got quite as much airtime as Swift’s outlandish essay. Through satire he must have shocked the upper class into…
as in the story “A Modest Proposal”. The story “A Modest Proposal” written by Jonathan Swift, is a depiction of poverty among Irish individuals especially those families that are large in size with a plethora of children in which they are facing difficulties to care for and turn to begging. Swift paints the picture by writing, “It is a melancholy object to those who walk through the great town or travel in the country, when they see the streets, the roads, and cabin doors, crowded with beggars…
Jonathan Swift’s writing reflects his personality in the sense that it is both playful and serious at the same time. This duality of playfulness and seriousness is especially evident in his pamphlet “A Modest Proposal.” The speaker of this text is not Swift, but instead, an anonymous figure that Swift uses as a vehicle to express his political views, poke fun at the British, and reveal his resentment of British policies toward the Irish. Straightforward and poignant in his assertions, the…
Thomas More’s Utopia and Jonathan Swift’s A Modest Proposal both captured my attention this semester with how they both were very political in addressing real life problems of their respective time periods. Thomas More was a writer of the 16th century while Jonathan Swift was a writer of the 18th century. The writing styles of both authors also plays an enormous part in how their points came across in each writing. More’s Utopia was writing in a humorous sort of style and Swift’s A Modest…
Jonathan Swifts “ A Modest Proposal”, a story written at the beginning of the 18th century, in a tongue in cheek style, to bring attention to various issues of the day including poverty, overpopulation and the hypocrisy of the Church. The subject on the surface is the proposition of selling human babies as food for profit, eradicating the poor people from the streets and providing a delicacy for the rich. The idea is presented in a very logical, straight forward way, the setting everyday life in…
A Modest Proposal, a famous satire written by Jonathan Swift cunningly tells of the tragedy that is taking place in Ireland. Swift’s descriptive storytelling and whimsical tone bring life to this satire. These two reasons are why I chose to use A Modest Proposal as my text to analyze. To have a better understanding of how to analyze this satire the literary element of my choosing will be style, tone, and irony. Style, tone, and irony each have specific distinct ways to allude the reader to what…
wrote the modest proposal was to end the food shortage in Ireland and feel the hunger crisis within stimulating the exchange and regulating the overpopulation of poverty of the poor. However, the author deceives the readers implying the idea came from an acquaintance from America stated how tasty infant’s meat was delicious and tender and the special way the chef prepares by basted, stewed, baked, boiled and roasted. Therefore, the baby skin turned into beautiful fine leather gloves for women…
This report assesses the key advantages and disadvantages of proposal 1 and 2 on the future of the Spit, with the data collected in the research booklet as well as the evaluation matrix located above. Proposal 1 is primarily about protecting and conserving the environment. This proposal requests to extend the Moreton Bay Marine Park to include The Spit and Broadwater in order to protect the remaining natural landscape of The Spit, while ensuring continued public access to parks and leisure…
