Perceval’s and comparing their quests and actions is fruitful when understanding their characters. Most fundamentally, the natures of their quests differ. Perceval is almost a wanderer, stumbling into the Fisher King whilst purely aiming to return to his mother, suddenly saddled with a quest much bigger than himself. Gauvain in contrast defends the honour of the ‘maiden with little sleeves’ and partakes in a traditional test of purity: conventional quests. However, Frappier is inherently more critical of Gauvain’s quest than Perceval’s, saying he is ‘more a tourist than quester of worldly prowess’ and even possesses a ‘varnish that hides a basic frivolity, a preoccupation with earthly glories and an incurable weakness for casual amours’ . Whilst an extreme interpretation, I would argue that Gauvain is fairly unchanged from his quest and remains a somewhat static and under…

“Sir Perceval! Sir Gawain is causing a real ruckus at the tavern, and I was told to come get you. Right away.” A young runner stood before Sir Perceval in the castle courtyard. The boy—perhaps ten—panted, a fine sheen of perspiration glistening on his brow in the fading evening light. “I see,” said Perceval. “I’ll be along soon.” “Erm, Master Will said he needed you now.” Will was Perceval’s father-in-law, and the owner of the Cup and Sword Tavern. The last thing Perceval wanted to do was…

front of the castle, and Arthur eyed the dozens of steps and groaned. He dropped onto the bottom step and Merlin took a seat right next to him. “Merlin…” There were three of him again. “Some pain a man must bear alone. Understand?” “I do. But if you change your mind, I’m here.” Arthur rose and spun to face the castle entry. “And that offer makes my life infinitely easier.” Perceval and Ulrich made their way down the stairs and stood before Arthur. Gods, Arthur felt like absolute shite at the…

Throughout Sir Gawain and the Green Knight, it does not take long to notice that a certain code of conduct, or code of ethics, is very prevalent throughout the poem. The poem includes several key aspects of medieval life, especially how following the code of chivalry is a requirement for knights. The knightly code of chivalry explains the bravery of Sir Gawain that is portrayed throughout the poem. During the story, Gawain’s chivalry is continuously tested, but it is not just Gawain’s chivalry…

“I will not love it! And isn’t it better to look like a fool with me than with Perceval? I mean, whoever your future husband may be.” Carina gave a wry grin and held out the other cucumber. “Just go ahead and grasp it and move your hand up and down with a firm grip.” Summoning her courage, Joan reached out and wrapped her hand around the cucumber, doing her best to imitate the actions Carina had demonstrated earlier. “You are a natural!” praised Carina, and Joan groaned at the statement. “Now…

For the next two weeks, Perceval and Joan went on evening walks whenever Perceval did not have night patrol. Gawain begged for details, but Perceval said nothing more than he and Joan were having a lovely time. And they were having a lovely time together. During their walks, they spoke of work, their families, their childhoods, and their interests. Perceval shared one story about how he and his patrol recently had a confrontation with some heavily-armed smugglers, and when he opened the rear…

did not work, and taking other women to bed to help him forget was no longer an option. What did other men do in these circumstances? Maybe he should discuss his troubles with Perceval and listen to the man’s advice for once. Still reclining, Gawain heard the heavy footsteps in the corridor, which had to be Perceval. Perceval was light on his feet when he wanted to be, but when annoyed, he banged around like an angry boar. Much to Gawain’s confusion, Perceval often brought up that day in…

Any honorable knight in medieval times needed to prove their worth by displaying one of the most noble traits – chivalry towards women. In Perceval: The Story of the Grail, the main character Perceval attempts to prove his worth in this way, but his obliviousness makes this difficult. One knight marvels over Perceval’s cluelessness, saying, “as God is my witness, his wits are distinctly scattered.” Throughout the epic poem Perceval: The Story of the Grail, the naive Perceval attempts to treat…

muttered Perceval. Perceval wanted to believe the king thought highly of him, but to hear Arthur speak those words aloud meant something. But would the king understand what Perceval was going through? Perceval took a deep breath. “All right, Sire, I’ll tell you…” Perceval shared the details of his seaside honeymoon and Joan’s subsequent assault at the hands of the Picts. He hesitated to mention the part where he’d offered his body to the head-Pict to save Joan, but went ahead with the truth…

do now? He needed that Grail to heal not only the Fisher King, but also his ill mother. Perceval pulled on the reins of his horse and brought it about-face towards the ominous forest behind him. He saw no point in raving like a madman at the deserted castle, and so, the only option Perceval saw left was to venture into the woods to look for someone who could tell him where the castle’s occupants had gone. Steadying himself with a deep breath, Perceval snapped the reins of his horse set off…
