Mutton?... ‘T is burnt, and so is all the meat. (IV, i, 57). Through the use of visual imagery Petruchio takes away a necessity of life, food from Kate. In this event Kate begs Petruchio to leave the meat alone claiming it to be well made. In this time period an after wedding party was supposed to be big and have a big feast. Petruchio already took that away from Kate by taking her to his home and now he acts as the dominant man and refuses to touch anything that is not perfect. When Kate and Petruchio are traveling to Bianca’s wedding, Petruchio decides to test Kate’s obedience in public through celestial imagery. Petruchio mocks Kate to show his dominance by saying, “… How bright and goodly shines the moon!/ The moon! The sun: it is not moonlight now./ I say it is the moon that shines so bright. (IV, v, 73). Husbands were the owners of their wives. They were treated as property and were expected to follow their husband’s rules and sayings. When Petruchio says the sun is the moon Kate begins to argue that it is the sun. In their relationship there is still the will of Kate to argue against Petruchio, but that changes when he states that if she does not agree with him they go home. Kate, not wanting to go back agrees that the sun is the moon by Petruchio’s words. He then said, “Nay, then you lie: it is the blessed sun” (IV, v, 73). Even after this event he still pushes Kate’s obedience especially when he wants her to kiss him in public.…
