My own conception of the term concerns a social coming together of men, primarily to endure the ordeal at hand: it is only with each individual writer’s removal from combat that the evidence of this bond appears in active literary efforts for the purposes of mourning and remembrance. That soldiers’ tributes and monuments to their fallen kin are largely literary in nature places them completely at odds with public monuments such as the Menin Gate, where the names of 55,000 dead render, according to Sassoon, “intolerably nameless [all of the] names (“On Passing the New Menin Gate,” The War Poems 153). Such tributes also differ greatly from the “parochial” memorials, “constructed by local committees,” that largely arose via Winter’s conception of kinship (Winter 40, 55). My research will highlight exactly where these two approaches to remembrance diverge, and will contribute to the discourse on Great War mourning and commemoration following Winter, as well as Paul Fussell and Jonathan Vance. My dissertation will consist of five chapters, one for each way the fighting men understood themselves to be isolated from non-combatants: geographical distance, class, age, ideology, and gender.
