That summer between fourth and fifth grade, I was registered for a day camp by my mother, who was confused by my new interest, though supportive nonetheless. Every day, for three weeks, I would arrive at the golf course early in the morning, eager to play and equipped with my lustrous deep red set of metallic clubs. We were divided into groups and proceed to different parts of the golf course. Like most standard golf courses, this course also had a driving range and additional putting greens for exclusively practicing those skills. We spent the cool mornings in those two areas surrounded…

Texting while driving is a wide range dilemma that is being swept under the rug. Drivers put themselves and others at risk when they pick up their cell phone behind the wheel. I plan to reduce texting while driving by informing my peers about the true dangers of this distracted driving. Many believe that a tragedy related to texting and driving will not happen to them; however, that is exactly what the victims said before jeopardizing their lives with a simple message that could have waited five…

On Tuesday night, December 8th of 2015. I waited impatiently by the Great Hall of the CCNY Shepard Hall. Seven twenty-three pm I looked at the clock on my phone. Small groups of people starts to enter the open door to the Great hall. Confusingly, I walk to the door and pick up the program note to CCNY choral concert. I went to the seating area and pick the row at the back. When everyone gathered, a man caught everyone’s attention, Ira Spaulding, introduced himself as the conductor of the…

His melding of the song’s lyrics with jocular remarks perfectly embodies the mixing and matching that occurs in jazz performances. Armstrong’s comments on his makeup and how hard the pianist is playing relax the atmosphere and sustain my attention on what he is saying. The instrumental play reacts to what he is saying, with his voice acting as a conductor, pulling the drums, bass, piano, trombone, and finally clarinet into playing. It seems that a lot of call and response is going on in this…

Track 5: The Glamorous Life Sheila E., The Glamorous Life One of the most significant outcomes of the Sunset Sound sessions was an album for Sheila Escovedo, a young Latin with well-honed percussion skills. She was the daughter of a professional backing player and had been introduced to Prince by Carlos Santana. With some considerable coaxing, Prince got Sheila to take a stab at the mic. Following a first, successful collaboration on “Erotic City,” Prince pulled her into the studio with a pile…

years how passionate I am about music, but even more specifically, I am passionate about singing. Ever since I was a child I loved to sing, however, I have not always been a good singer. The wind had died down and their spirits were renewed. Even three hours away, the mountain range was still astonishing. It was if the mountains had a mystery, just waiting to be discovered. As the miles counted down, they found themselves deeper and deeper in the Rocky Mountains. The mountains were majestic. Towering mounds of earth with a fresh blanket of snow. Evergreen trees lined halfway up the face of the mountains, as if their only purpose was to accent the wonder. It was extremely…

touches on the relationship between identity and the voice, by saying “Just like our identities, we have multiple voices, but society often puts our voices in binaries: you either have a male voice or female voice”. Anderson's use of voice in performance is significant for the substantial array of voices and technological mediation she used to expand and diversify her vocal range. She claims that, “Everyone has at least twenty [voices], bottom line. They have their hail-a-cab voice, they have…

The camp is in the Wind River Mountain Range, which is wild and remote. The air is crisp, the sky is huge, and the camp itself is only a few log cabins and tents. We started right in on staff training: practicing our horse-riding, learning how to teach rodeo barrel and pole races, and trying to rope almost everything. One of my favorite activities was to wake up at the crack of dawn wrangle the horses up to the high pasture. The misty air would whistle around the galloping horses. We later…
