The book The Alchemist, by Brazilian writer Paolo Coelho, tells the story about a boy named Santiago who changed a lot through his journey as he discovered that he was the Alchemist and became a spiritual leader. Similarly, the novel The Deportation of Wopper Barraza, by Chicano writer Maceo Montoya, introduces us to a character named Wopper who also changed as a result of his journey and was surprised to learn that he would become a political leader, a Municipal Representative. However, even though the characters have similarities, there are some differences between them. He is a boy who makes his own decisions. For example, when his parents wanted him to become a priest, he decided to become a shepherd and leave Andalusia. He’s also determined to find his treasure, which is Santiago's Personal Legend. During his journey across Africa, there were many obstacles along the way, but he never gave up. His hard work pays off and he gets rewarded with becoming the counselor of the Oasis. The author writes, “ The tribal chieftain called for the boy, and presented him with fifty pieces of gold. He repeated his story about Joseph of Egypt, and asked the boy to become the counselor of the oasis” (Coelho 117). As we can see, the chieftain recognized the potential of Santiago’s power, and he offered him to become the leader of the Oasis. In addition, Santiago became an Alchemist. Santiago was always the Alchemist, but he didn’t know it until he discovered his full potential after he turned into the wind. Finally, he went back to the abandoned church where he started from and he dig up and found the treasure, he showed a lot of perseverance in all the obstacles he went through, It was worth it because he found his true love and he learned to understand the Language of the Universe and he meet the King of Salem and more importantly the Alchemist.
