The Democrats nominated Wilson for president in 1912, selecting Thomas Marshall, the governor of Indiana, as his vice president running mate. The Republican Party split over their choice for a presidential candidate. Conservative Republicans re-nominated President William Taft. While the progressive wing split off to form the Progressive Party and they nominated Theodore Roosevelt, who had already served as the president from 1901 to 1909.
