In the first reading the author Jessica Lopez explicits the story of a young teenager who came from two different ethnicity background. she attended a predominantly white high school. The young teenager had to confront so many challenges because of her race, and how terrifying it was to be a woman of color . After graduating from high school, the young teenager attended St. Kate’s University to pursue a high level of education. As she found herself being in a class where there was few women of color, the young woman couldn’t escape her childhood memories. However, as she felt the desire of leaving the school, the young women found comfort from fellow students at the University who were also women of color. Personally, what spoke to me in this reading was the fact that the young girl had such confidence and motivation after graduating from High school where most of students were white. Then, when she attended St. kate’s to find herself in a class where there was few women of color. She stated “... my fantasy quickly dissolved as I once again was one of two students of color in the Reflective Women class. Childhood feeling of racial tension that I thought I had overcome quickly resurfaced” (Lyman 56).
There was a time in my life where I felt like my past was finally behind. That I was in a better place where I could just be myself. But I came to realise It was something that I couldn’t escape rather that I had to face.
