Atticus was brave for defending a black man in a time where African Americans and White people weren't equal. Atticus’s whole town disapproved of him representing this man in court since he was a black. Atticus said “It's when you know you're already licked before you begin but you begin anyway and see it through no matter what” (Lee 112). This quote characterized Atticus as a brave man, and overall a good person. He knew that he would lose the case against him, but in his mind, he knew he had to support the African American because that's the right thing to do. This quote by Atticus uses imagery to really prove to the reader and allow them to feel his passion for doing the right thing. Atticus Finch supported a African American in a racist time when some people thought they should still be slaves. Atticus knew in his heart and conscience that he should do the right thing and support this man even though he never had a chance of winning and that's what makes him so
