Herodotus wrote his work, The Histories, to educate people about his findings about his travels and how the people from these different cultures interacted and lived their lives.
2. How might his status as an outsider (he, himself was neither Scythian, nor an Amazon) assist or impede his ability to write impartially about his subject?
Since Herodotus was neither an Scythian nor an Amazon, he could record what he witnessed fairly. He could write down what he saw without changing any details to make one group look better or worse. Although, that is not to say that he did not change any part of his records to make his work seem more interesting …show more content…
This is evidence of something that Herodotus observed, so it appears that this would be factual. Another example of a historical fact is that in paragraph 108, Herodotus says that the Greeks have adorned temples built for Grecian gods. This is also something that Herodotus observed, so it could also be assumed that this is factual evidence. One last example of factual evidence is in paragraph 114, when Herodotus quotes the Scythians and the Amazons. This is information that is straight from the source being observed. One example of embellished material is that in paragraph 106, Herodotus refers to the Amazons as Man-Eaters. This shows a little bit of Herodotus’s opinion mixed into the writing. Another example of embellished material is in paragraph 111. Herodotus states that, “The Scyths could not tell what to make of the attack upon them.” This statement makes it seem as though he knew exactly what the Scythians were thinking without actually quoting them. The last legendary example is located in paragraph 113. In this paragraph Herodotus stated how the Scythians attacked an Amazon, and told about the promise that the Amazon made to them. This is a confrontation that Herodotus was probably not there for, so he would not know what exactly happened between the Amazons and the Scythians.

What was Dr. Jeannine Davis-Kimball’s research questions?
Dr. Jeannine Davis-Kimball’s research questions asked whether the Amazonian woman actually existed and what happened to them, and if members of the Kozak tribe are descendants of the Amazonian woman
2. List all primary sources Dr. Jeannine Davis-Kimball’s relies on to draw her conclusion.
Dr. Jeannine Davis-Kimball relied on artifacts such as; beads, bowls, an earring, female skull and bones, and arrowheads. She also researched documents written by Herodotus.
3. Create a research timeline for Dr. Davis-Kimball’s work testing her hypothesis. How long did it take for her to find an answer to her research question?
Dr. Davis-Kimball began studying nomadic people in 1985. In 1994, she teamed up with other researchers and found remains and artifacts in Russia. They researched these remains and found them to be remains of women who seemed to be taller and stronger than the average woman of the time. The shape of their femur also gave away that they rode horses often. Dr. Davis-Kimball then visits the Kozak tribe of Mongolia and finds a little girl with blonde hair, which the Amazons were said to have. The DNA of the little girl and her mother matched that of a skeleton that was found on the Russian burial site, which occurred in 2004. It took about 20 years for Dr. Davis-Kimball to find answers to her research
