Reflection On Felicia Low Interpersonal Communication

For this assignment, I interviewed Felicia Low, a Program Advisor at the School of Public Health. This interview taught me a lot about myself and my interpersonal communication skills when it comes to communication on a one-on-one basis. Prior to the interview, I was a bit nervous since I did not know Mrs. Low personally and never communicated with her face-to-face. I prepared to conduct the interview in a way that it would feel like a normal conversation and not a regular interview. For example, I would not always say things from the interview questions that I prepared, I would sometimes ask a question on piece of information that she would share. I also wanted to make sure that before I went for the interview, that I had enough space on my phone to record the interview and that it was fully charged. I felt as though using my phone to record would allow me to listen to all that she had to say and keep eye contact, rather than writing information down as she talked. Low is an advisor in the School of Public Health, her main focus is education and advising, so she could not provide me with much information on the problems in communication with Public Health Science. However, she did inform me that, “It is necessary to be extremely specific and ensure that there are no underlying meanings to anything that it is put out into the public because they may receive it a different way than intended.” This is a huge issue in communication and the reasons why there is animosity between the health environment and society due to the ineffective communication skills. She also touched base on how important it is to know a bit of the language to the countries that one travels to. It is imperative, especially in the Public Health Field, to be able to relate and communicate to the people of the country
