What I Learned In A Leadership Class

What do you know now about yourself that you did not know at the beginning of the course? (This is about you, not leadership concepts.) When I started this course I was very nervous about how I would do in the open class environment that we have. After the first class I went home and strongly debated about dropping this class for one that does not require so much talking. I generally am a person that avoids talking in front of large groups, even answering questions in class makes me nervous. As we have progresses through this semester I have noticed that once I take the first step and start actually talking I get more comfortable. The longer I talk and the more times I do the more comfortable I am getting. Although I feel more comfortable …show more content…
The first major area I need to work on is confidence. Although we have not specifically touched on confidence in class, to my memory, I feel it is the number one thing I need to work on. From me, I believe that confidence is one of the most important factors when trying to be a leader. It is really the first step to get people to follow you and buy into what you are doing. At the mid-point of this class I can tell already that I have improved in this category. I get less nervous when speaking in front of the class and I am starting to get to the point of sharing my opinions and not worrying about what people. If can get comfortable in front of class, I feel like I will be able to step in front of a group of peers and be a leader. Secondly I believe I need to work on being more encouraging when people are struggling. My nature as a person is to take it over from that person instead of working through it with them and helping them along the way. Leaders need to be able to teach and guide their follower. This will allow more freedom to your followers which in turn builds confidence and helps people feel good about what they are doing. It will also allow for more to get done. Lastly one of the major areas I need to improve in to help me become a better leader is open up to people more. In the past when I have gone to work I leave my personal life behind and focus on the tasks at hand. What I should be doing is using my life experiences to help me get through things and to help others around me. I need to open up and allow my experiences help others. These are just a few key points I need to work on to become a successful
