Shulman and Leutze Patriotic Work
David Shulman and Emanuel Leutze mark the significance of Washington crossing the
Delaware through literature and imagery, but both men have many comparisons and contrasts in their work. On December 25, 1776 George Washington and his troops cross the Delaware River in hopes of surprising the Hessians. This event has been turned into a piece of literature by David
Shulman for the poetic enthusiasts. David Shulman wrote the poem “Washington Crossing the
Delaware”. Emanuel Leutze brought this event to life for the artistic, kinesthetic viewers.
Emanuel named his painting Washington Crossing the Delaware.

Jimenez 2 a great general. In contrast to that opinion, Leutze’s work of art can be taken negatively or positively. Viewers may say “Wow what a great painting, this is a very patriotic art representing George Washington”. Other viewers may say “what a horrible general while his troops struggle with the oars he is just standing there” so, this is one significant way the painting and poem contrast.

American history. Leutze’s painting is a more bias example of this significant event because the viewer can agree or disagree to like this event or not. However, both poem and painting represent this significant, and in both pieces of structures a viewer can pull a theme from it.
