Virginia Axline Play Therapy

Group for children is the primary topic of chapter 9 in the Corey the Book. Where do these children come from? Children are generally referred to groups and these groups originate in a school setting. They are referred for various reasons, which could run the gamut of poor social skills to experiencing a crisis. An example of a relatable crisis is school shootings. Unfortunately, an act of this kind takes place and immediately creates a need for a group. With that being said on some level groups can originate instantly, but most are planned. Most of them are quite brief, so the school environment is a perfect place for groups to occur. As I previously stated, a counselor should be skilled at this concept and utilize techniques that will assist individuals with growing learning and implementing change. Well, children love to play, Virginia Axline, a former student of Carl Rogers introduced play therapy. It works well with children and the most common form used is child-centered play. It takes the focus off the therapist and allows the children to experience self-exploration, self-discovery and self-actualization. Schools today have to address a range of topics, child abuse, child molestation, divorce, and bullying among other topics. Counselors have to be open to alternative approaches to counseling. They must get everyone involved, parents, teachers and administrators. Counseling works well when individuals collaborate, this is a good way to ensure that counselors have support where they work and that everyone is looking to do what works for the children. In doing what works for the children, who attend group, counselors must create a proposal, make sure it has a purpose and lays out guidelines, pick the proper location, make initial contact with the parents and enlist the help of the teachers and the administrators when doing so. This allows the group therapy process to become full circle , information is provided regarding the student’s progress or lack thereof so that certain skills can be
