Some people are victimized, not because they are children or because they are elderly. Some people are victimized purely because of characteristics that they have that others do not like. If someone commits a crime against another because of the color of his or her skin, or because of his or her gender, this is a hate crime. Basically, of the 8,336 people that were victims of hate crimes in 2009 (253), an equal amount were black, an equal amount were men, an equal amount were women, and an equal amount were white. However, those that live in big cities, or urban neighborhoods, have a higher risk of being victims, and we see that those that live in poverty have the highest chance of being the victim of a hate crime. The consequences of hate crimes are severe. For example, there is the physical injury that may have resulted. Labor trafficking is used to exploit someone for labor. This can be broken down into bonded labor or debt bondage, forced labor, and involuntary domestic servitude. Bonded labor is when a person is forced to work, against their will, to pay off a debt that he or she owes. Forced labor is when a person if forced to work by being threatened by violence, and they have very limited freedom. Involuntary domestic servitude is when a person is forced to work in a position in a private residence, like a maid. Often times, because they work in a private residence, it is hard for people to see any wrongdoing.
