Humility has been one of the most important characteristics that I think every person should have. The Upward Bound community is a remarkable organization where this characteristic is teached and applied in all the aspects. They take students with low income that have less opportunities, molding many different features in them. I am a prove of that, I was an ESL student in my school. I worked hard to show to the world that the opportunities are there, you just have to take them. Upward Bound program gave me this opportunity to improve myself. They trusted me, demonstrating that they would help any student that ask for their help.

Another important characteristic from the Upward Bound program is the way they tell the students that they can help each other. As an example of that I can use the program that I started , from the inspiration of helping people. The extracurricular activity I am most proud of is the group LASO, (Latin American Students Association). As president

The time you go to sleep, the time you should do your homework, time management , calendars, are all focus in this huge word “Responsibility”. Counselors, teachers, they give us timelines, they expect us to be there on time. All together is going to make better students, better humans. This characteristic is something that you learn at home and with our family. Upward Bound program is a new family that I know is always there for me. They are my family, to be honest it was difficult for me to adapt to this new family, otherwise I do not have anything to regret. I cannot find a way to give back the different advice that this community gave me. All I can say is thank you. I do not know who is going to win these award , but I am pretty sure you would make the right

Some of my biggest accomplishments have been achieved because of one honor I received years ago. At age 7 I was admitted into the Talented and Gifted (TAG) program. The TAG program is for unique students with an IQ over 120 who aren't being challenged by the school's typical curriculum. This program has presented some of the most delightful challenges and rewarded some of the sweetest accomplishments to my peers and I. The influence of the TAG program can be divided into three different factions: peer competition, challenges from my instructor, and diverse experiences outside of the classroom.…

Poverty is one of the few reasons that children in Central America have apathy towards attending school. Young adults tend to obtain a job, and in countless ways succor the family with food, bills, the house, and many other necessities. My parents grew up in Central America, within a poor environment, with lack of clean water, insufficient clothing and a scarce amount of money. Consequently my parents had to withdraw from studying. The experience of living on the edge of absolute poverty influenced my parents to secure the future of their children, with any sacrifice.…

At Xavier University we believe in the “All for One and One for All” philosophy; showing that camaraderie and equality among all are still possible. One way Xavier lives up to its support for students is through the one-year long Smooth Transition mentoring program. I served as a smooth transition mentor to three incoming first-year students during the 2016-2017 academic year. In order to ensure that they have a successful first year at Xavier, I informed them about the resources Xavier University provides, including the writing center, mathematics lab, tutoring services, Ohio link, and much more. I also advised them to make good decisions and form relationships with people who would motivate them to succeed.…

Having gone through what I did, I never truly had a plan for the future. I knew I had to attend college but it was not until I was recruited by the local TRiO program that I truly believed that there could be a future for me. ConnCAP/Upward Bound was established by the Higher Education Act of 1965 to help low-income first-generation students realize their full potential and attain their goal of completing high school and obtaining higher education. I stayed overnight at L’Arche International in Clinton, Iowa from October 13th-October 14th as my community service project. L’arche is a nonprofit organization that provides home, community, and and support for adults who have intellectual disabilities. During this time, my group and I participated in birthday celebrations, prayer, song, community service, and sharing life. This opportunity allowed me the chance to both learn and reflect about this marginalized population. When we initially got to L’Arche, we were greeted by the student coordinator, Bethany.…

“Intellectual humility is when the critical thinker habitually recognizes the limits to their knowledge or experience. Before I took this class I had never heard of the intellectual traits for disciplined minds so it was very eye opening. As for intellectual humility, I would honestly say that I was somewhat arrogant in my thinking. I am currently working towards a better understanding and applying intellectual humility to my life. Philosophy Statement I have chosen to work in this field because I believe that early school years are the most significant in a child’s life as they lay the foundation for future education. True education is one that brings out the person’s potential. Education should encompass the whole child—intellectual, social, emotional and physical aspects of his/her being. Being a preschool teacher involves a true love for the career and working with children. "…
