The Union
The Union Army’s Uniform was inspired by France’s military uniforms. The uniform had many variations across different troops and soldiers. During the Civil War, supplies were very limited so it was hard to get materials and fabric. Because of this, people in the army had to put together their own outfit resulting in varying uniforms.
The Union Army: Service and Campaign Uniform
The Union Army’s service and campaign consisted of a black felt hat that had one brim with a silver eagle on it. These hats were required in both non-dress and service occasions. Confederate Navy: Undress Uniform Vests For all officers the vest was either gray or white with a short collar that stands up and nine small buttons on the front. The vest was not supposed to be seen under the coat.
Confederate Navy: Undress Uniform Pantaloons Pantaloons were pieces of fabric that covered officers shoes. A Navy officer’s pantaloons were gray or white and loose so they could cover up the shoe or boot.
Confederate Navy: Shoulder Straps In the Confederate Navy, officers wore shoulder straps to show their rank. Shoulder straps would have different insignia on them to signify rank and the fabric color of the strap would show what are of service the officer was in. For example, Sea officers had sky blue shoulder straps and a surgeon’s shoulder strap would be black.
Confederate Navy: Caps Caps for navy officers were gray with a leather visor in front. The hat itself had to be 4 inches tall and 10 inches across the top. This hat was to be worn by all officers in their service or dress uniform. All the buttons had the same design on them. The buttons had a picture of a navy ship with small words along the edge.
Confederate Navy: Jackets These jackets were authorized for wear for any officer who was at sea. These officers could where the jacket at any time other than general muster. The jackets were white or grey and double breasted. The jacket had the same number of button as the officer’s undress coat. Officers were to wear their shoulder straps on the shoulders of the jacket. Officers also had the option of wearing a grey overcoat. This coat had the same number of buttons as the officer’s regular coat and the appropriate shoulder straps. On this coat, there was no buttons on the pockets.
Confederate Navy: Summer Dress When it was warm or the officer was in a tropical climate, officers wore their summer uniform. This uniform was made out grey summer cloth. With this uniform officers could also wear a white straw hat that was six inches tall and had a three-inch rim around it.
