In the short story “Treasure of Lemon Brown” by Walter Dean Myers, and the novel “The Pearl” by John Steinbeck the main characters changed what they valued in life by resolving an internal conflict. While each character faced a different struggle they both valued family in the end.
Greg's experience changed his sense of importance because he met Lemon Brown. At first he didn't care about what his dad had to say and he didn't listen to his dad. On page 18 it says, “He stood to go upstairs, thought of the lecture that probably awaited him if he did anything except shut himself in his room with his math book, and started walking down the street instead.” This is showing that Greg doesn't care about what his dad has to say. After meeting Lemon Brown when he leaves the abandoned apartment, he is smiling when he thought about the lecture he would get from his dad. On page 26 it says, “Greg pushed the button over the bell marked “Ridley” thought of the lecture his father would give him, and smiled.” This shows that Greg changed about how he feels toward what his dad has to say.

When he found the Pearl all he cared about was what it was worth and all the stuff he could get with it. In the beginning of the story on page 24 it says, “We will have new clothes.” and it says, “We will be married in the church.” This means that Kino thinks with the money the Pearl is worth he can provide a good life for his family. Suddenly Kino started caring about the Pearl more than he cared about his family and it caused losses between him and his family. At the end of the story on page 89 it says, “And Kino drew back his arm and flung the pearl with all his might. Kino and Juana watched it go, winking and glimmering under the setting sun.” In addition, this shows that the pearl didn't mean anything to him anymore and in the end he didn't get anything he

My favorite story of this year was “The Treasure of Lemon Brown”. The reason why it was my favorite was because it shows us how something that costs nothing and looks bad could be so valuable to someone and how it means something important to one. The genre of this story is short story. The charters in the story are Lemon Brown, Greg, Greg’s dad, and the robbers that tried to steal Lemon Brown’s treasure. In the story the robber says “Where’s his gold?…

When Greg first meets Lemon, he notices a striking appearance; “ His black, heavily wrinkled face was surrounded by a halo of crinkly white hair and whiskers that seemed to separate his head from the layers of dirty coats piled on his smallish frame” (20). This atypical description of a homeless man reflects an angelic image which foreshadows his goodness. This quality is once again seen in his actions. To protect Greg, he willingly throws himself down the stairs to insure Greg’s safety from the thugs. This action portrayed his selfless character in which he risks his own life to save Greg’s who is a stranger whom he barely knew.…

The theme of The Treasure of Lemon Brown is no matter how poor you are, no matter who you are, that you have something that you think is important, something you would risk your life for, a treasure. Lemon Brown’s treasure is an old harmonica. To you and I, this may not seem like anything special, but to Lemon Brown, this is the most precious thing in the world. This seemingly worthless harmonica is important to him because he gave it to his son, who passed away when he was in the army. While he was in the army he sadly died.…

For instance, Greg’s father wants him to study for better grades instead of being able to play ball, he disobediently goes off, “[checks] for traffic and [makes] a dash across the street” (Myers 1). In other words, Greg wants to get away from what is forced from him and he dealt with this situation by aimlessly and rebelliously walking down the streets. Most humans sometimes stray away from what is expected by others to cope with the different things they are facing, whether it be perilous, discouraging, or frustrating. Additionally, Lemon Brown desperately protects his valuables and Greg by hurling “his body down the stairs at the men who [has] come to take his treasure” (Myers 4). As readers can realize, he acts out of the urge that unless he acted quickly, Lemon Brown’s treasures and the child he is fond of would be hurt or taken away from him.…
