[…] If her right eye was blacked and she was beaten mostly on the right side of the face, it would tend to show that a left-handed person did it. This showed that Tom was clearly innocent because he was left handed and proved Mayella father, Mr. Ewell was guilty since Mayella was hint on her right side and Mr. Ewell was right-handed. The trial begins with Sheriff Tate and Mr. Ewell being questioned. It was established that the sheriff went to the Ewell home upon Mr. Ewell’s request. The daughter, Mayella, was found on the floor beaten and bruised, and both the father and daughter accused Tom Robinson of the attack. Upon cross-examination, Atticus made it clear that a doctor had not examined Mayella to verify the rape, the injuries were on the girl’s right side indicating the attacker would need to be left-handed, and Mr. Ewell was definitely left-handed. Mayella took the stand next.…

It shows that Tom was speaking truth when he wasn’t the person who abused Mayella. Another example is that Atticus also found out that Bob Ewell is lying when he said Tom punched Mayella on the face. “You use your left hand when you’re writing” (page 238). This shows that Bob lied about Tom hit her…

In this journal I will be predicting the case verdict in pages 208- 281. The first thing that I predict is that the Ewell’s will lose this case. For instance I think they will lose is because Atticus got evidence from when Mr. Ewell is on the stand he is left-handed. I infer form this evidence that he beat up Mayella because people who are left-handed beat up the right side of someone. I think her dad raped her because when he was on the stand from the text of the book it seemed as if he knew exactly what happened.…

Atticus asks Mayella “Who beat you up? Tom Robinson or your father”(Lee 251). Atticus figured that she was abused from her father and not from Tom because Mayella was abused mostly on her right side and it was from a left-handed person. Her father Robert E. Lee Ewell was proven left-handed when he wrote his name on the envelope that Atticus shown to the jury and the judge, but the judge didn't quite understand why writing his name would reason anything.…

Evidence that ruled in Tom’s favor was immediately ignored by the jury. When Atticus Finch proved to the court that Mayella Ewell was beaten by a left-handed man since most of her injuries were on her right side, it was dismissed. Atticus Finch even confirmed that Tom Robinson was right-handed and had a bad accident at work that rendered him partially crippled. His left arm was withered and 12 inches shorter than his right which would make it nearly impossible for him to have beaten Mayella Ewell. Although, Tom Robinson is clearly innocent, he was still convicted for a crime he was not even physically capable of committing because of his race.…

This because the whole time he is talking he continues to build on his argument, rather than focus on the audience. He appeals to logos when he talks about the only logical outcome that could have happened during the crime, “... she struck out at her victim - of necessity she must put him away from her - he must be removed from her presence, from this world.” He attempts to explain Mayella’s thinking, so that it can be explained why the Ewell’s took this “crime” to court. He explains how Tom could not have possibly attacked Mayella, while appealing to logos, “ … (Bob Ewell) he swore out a warrant, no doubt signing it with his left hand, and now Tom Robinson sits before you, having taken the oath with the only good hand he possesses - his right hand.” Atticus includes this information because while Mayella testifies, she talks of how she was punched across her right side of her face.…

When Atticus asks for the reason why Mr. Ewell has not provided medical assistance to his daughter, Mr. Ewell only replies “[I have] no need to. [I have] seen what happened.”(p.175) Through this testimony, one can easily determine that Mr. Ewell either takes little care for his daughter’s well-being, or most likely the rape is false. The third evidence that proves Tom Robinson is not guilty is when he has testified that Mayella has kissed him, instead of being raped by him. He has told the jury that Mayella “attacked” him on the day of the incident by suddenly kissing and embracing him.…

Ewell told the court. Bob pointed directly at Tom Robinson, claiming that he was the black man that he saw through the window, later confirming that he crossed paths with him as Tom escaped from the front door. Mayella’s condition was brought into the mix as Atticus questions whether Bob made an attempt to fetch a doctor to accompany all the running completed the following night. Bob claims that he didn’t call a doctor because he knew who the assailant was, and hesitantly stated that it would’ve costed him 5$. Furthermore, the judge had great trust in Atticus and had personally asked to take on Tom Robinson case hoping that Tom has a fair fight in the case. Atticus explains to Mr Underwood by saying, “ I couldn't let him down, he was innocent and I am going to prove it.” (96). Judge Taylor knew that Atticus was a great lawyer and had wanted him to represent a man that he too felt was innocent. Atticus had intelligently chosen a case that was impossible and made it work, he found a way to use the simple fact of Mr Ewell being left handed and proved that it was not possible for Tom Robinson to create harm with a crippled…

He is on trial for being an accused rapist, but the audience notices something about him, his left arm is crippled , Atticus is in the testimony of Mayella, he explains to the court “He got it caught in a cotton gin...when he (a) was boy...like bled to death… tore all the muscles from his bones”(page 249). Him telling this to the court shows that he is incapable of physically harming Mayella Ewell. Another example is when Scout, Jem and Dill are present at the case listening to the testimony of Tom Robinson . Scout realizes the reasoning for Mayella to have went below her skin color to feel a type of connection with someone ,the explanation is shown by Scout thinking “As Tom Robinson gave his testimony, it came to me that Mayella Ewell must have been the loneliest person in the world”(page 250).…
