O’Brien affected Winston’s perception on Big Brother by using his fear of rats to manipulate him. “‘In your case,’ said O’Brien, ‘the worst thing in the world happens to be rats.’” By using Winston’s worst fear, O’Brien was likely to alter Winston’s mind just like how the soldiers were capable of overcoming their fears from the embarrassment that they felt. The concept is very much similar to The Things They Carried because both authors focus on how the characters feel when they are under pressure. Even though the characters within both novels are facing difficult situations that cause them to have emotional conflicts, the characters let the emotions get the best of them. After the war, the soldiers are left with regret and sorrow from the emotional conflicts that were built from the objects during war.
