Poliomyelitis
Poliomyelitis otherwise known as “Polio†is an infectious viral disease that affects the nervous system and can cause “paralysis†(paralyzation) or death if left uncured.
There are three different types of the disease - Paralytic, Nonparalytic and Sub-Clinical.
Types of Polio Infections
Paralytic - the rarest and most serious type of Polio - which is the highest chance to leading to full or partial paralysis. There are also three different types of Paralytic Polio (Spinal, Bulbar and Brainstem)
Non Paralytic - Does not produce paralysis, affects the central nervous system, only mild symptoms.

WHAT : Invented the Polio Vaccine.
WHEN : 1955
WHERE : Salk and his lab tech team (him, his wife, and their three sons) at The University of Pittsburgh
WHY : In 1955, there was nearly 29,000 cases of polio in the US. By 1957, that number had decreased to a little less than 6,000
HOW : After injection, the immune system would create anti-bodies that would fight against the infection
The Vaccine
There are two types of Polio vaccine.
Inactivated Polio Vaccine (IPV) - used since 2000, given by injection in the leg or the arm. (Depending on the age)
Oral Polio Vaccine (OPV) is given by the mouth.
The Degree/Profession
Salk graduated from the New York City School Of Medicine.
Salk was a medical researcher and virologist (studies viruses and virus agents).
Salk was the head of The Virus Research Lab.
This profession can be found today by working in a researching hospital lab.
Typically need a PHD or degree in science or biology to be a medical researcher.
