Thirteen Reasons Why Research Paper

Thirteen Reasons Why by Jay Asher, is about thirteen reasons why a teenage girl takes her own life. Thirteen Reasons Why was the third most challenged book in 2012 according to the American Library Association, "A challenge is defined as a formal, written complaint, filed with a library or school requesting that materials be removed because of content or appropriateness" (Top Ten Frequently Challenged Books Lists of this the 21st Century). Thirteen Reasons Why should not be banned. The American Library Association (ALA) has some very good points on why this book should be banned, but I personally believe you can learn from the mistakes that the characters make in the book. "Each year, the ALA's Office for Intellectual Freedom compiles a list of the top ten most frequently challenged books in order to inform the public about censorship in libraries and schools" (Top Ten Frequently Challenged Books Lists of the 21st Century). Hannah Barker is the girl who commits suicide in this book. "The American Association of School Administrators and the American Library Association define censorship as: '[T]he removal, suppression, or restricted circulation of literary, artistic, or educational materials — of images, ideas, and information — on the grounds that these are morally or otherwise objectionable in light of standards applied by the censor'" (Schools and Censorship: Banned Books). Young adults in this day and age think they can say or do anything and there will be no real effects, but that is not the case at all "I know what you are all thinking.
