Romeo and Juliet is one of the most popular plays ever written. This writing displays irony because Juliet goes to the extent of faking her death to be with Romeo. However, the play ends with both of the star-crossed lovers committing suicide. Irony is often used in stories and our everyday lives. Irony is when one thing is expected to happen, but the opposite occurs. Three types of irony are situational, verbal, and dramatic. Each of the types of irony have the same general meaning however, their specific definitions differ.
To begin, situational irony is a common type of irony. Situational irony is when something happens in the story that contradicts the expectations of the characters or a reader. An example of this irony is in “The …show more content…
On page 216 Rainsford and Whitney were conversing as Rainsford explained “luckily, you and I are the hunters” while discussing the two classes of the world. However, as the story progressed Rainsford found himself stuck on an island without his crew and later became the hunted instead of the hunter. General Zaroff owned the island and would hunt humans that became stranded there. Eventually Zaroff told Rainsford it was time, declaring “ you’ll find this game worth playing...your brain against mine.” This is ironic because because as a reader we expected a story of Rainsford and his crew on a hunting trip however he ends up solely becoming prey. Another example of situational irony is in “The Necklace” by Guy de Maupassant. The main character had a strong desire for wealth however in the end she ended up deeper in poverty than she began. On page 294 it suggests “she suffered constantly, feeling that all the attributes of a gracious life, every luxury, should have rightfully been hers.” Then after attending an upper class event, she lost the jewelry she borrowed and instead of being honest, she bought a replacement.
