In this case study the charge nurse has legitimate power. This type of power is a hierarchal type of power. Meaning the charge nurse has the authority to delegate tasks and assignments. The conflict within this scenario is an organizational conflict. Having scarce resources is the definition of organizational conflict (Huber, 2014). There is a scarce amount of nurse staffing for the amount of patients to care for. If they are refusing because they feel the assigned task is out of their scope of practice. The charge nurse should figure out if it is or is not. If it is out of their scope of practice, the charge nurse accepts that. If it is not, she needs to provide them with the proper educational material that states they will be working within their scope of practice. If their answer is that they do not feel their assignment is too much for them to handle, the charge nurse can try using motivational conversation with them and off her assistance to help in the tasks. Or if there answer is that they do not feel comfortable caring for this patient, the charge nurse could consider changing their assignment. Reporting their refusal to accept a delegated task could be another option. It would depend upon their answer as to why they are refusing to complete the task. It is important to remember that we are all part of a team, and that working alongside each other to help meet our patient’s needs and help each other to not drown in the process. Improved patient safety has been reported when there is teamwork within the staff (West et al., 2012).
