The Scorpion Analysis

The Driver’s jacket from the 2011 film, Drive became sort of a symbol for the film. The jacket and the idea of the scorpion means a lot more than people think. In a phone call, The Driver tells a key quote of the movie: “Have you ever heard of the story of the scorpion and the frog?” The story is of an old fable, unknown origin which describes a pact made between a Scorpion and a Frog. The Scorpion pleads with the Frog to carry it across a river on its back. The Frog asks, “but how do I know you will not sting me?”. The Scorpion responds, “If I sting you, you will die and I will drown in the river.” The Frog agrees, and halfway across the river, the Scorpion stings the Frog. When asked why he did it, the Scorpion replies that it is his nature.”
This old story is used to show that some creatures, behaviour is uncontrollable, and that their primal instincts will take over regardless of the consequences. People think that The Driver is the scorpion because he's marked by a scorpion symbol on his jacket …show more content…
After meeting Irene, The Driver begins to try and move away from his criminal past, and start building a normal life with Irene free from crime and violence. In that elevator, his true nature shown and by killing the man in a horrifically violent way, he destroys his relationship with Irene who is ultimately terrified of him now. His look when he turns around and sees Irene, he can barely believe what he has done, his eyes wide and body shaking, his expression changes from shock to sorrow. As the doors close on the The Driver he realizes that he has removed Irene from his life forever, and in that moment, The Driver has stung himself and like a scorpion who string, he dies.
