After meeting Irene, The Driver begins to try and move away from his criminal past, and start building a normal life with Irene free from crime and violence. In that elevator, his true nature shown and by killing the man in a horrifically violent way, he destroys his relationship with Irene who is ultimately terrified of him now. His look when he turns around and sees Irene, he can barely believe what he has done, his eyes wide and body shaking, his expression changes from shock to sorrow. As the doors close on the The Driver he realizes that he has removed Irene from his life forever, and in that moment, The Driver has stung himself and like a scorpion who string, he dies.
