While I reviewed them with her, she already understood how to do them and the reasoning behind why she was being taught this. If I were to be presented with a patient who required more teaching, I would make sure to reiterate the primary nurses teaching, and continue to help the patient understand why they were doing certain things. For example, when teaching ankle pumping, I would teach the patient that the reason for doing this is to prevent an embolism from occurring, and causing complications and extending their hospital stay. For deep breathing and coughing, I would make sure that they understood why this was done and how it helps to prevent a nosocomial infection such as pneumonia.
