Song lyrics have always been more poetic than people tend to give credit, through their imaginative and emotional style of expressing the author’s intents yet allowing each listener to add their own experiences into the interpretation. Recorded in 1972 and released in 1973, Led Zeppelin’s “The Rain Song” displays the bands creative genius in producing a ballad that has stood the test of time. This song could be described as a song that can cheer you up when you’re melancholy. It makes one thankful when they are in love and will also make one appreciate their loved one. The guitar is simply beautiful and when the piano and strings are added together, the song becomes complete. The orchestration of the instruments adds to the overall message of the song. It is evident that people love and experience loss in life because of the number of relationships and marriages that end. It is rare to find a couple that has stuck together for all the “rises and falls” and seasons of emotions throughout the course of relationships. It is a song that makes people fall in love with it as soon as it is heard because they can relate to it. “The Rain Song” is Led Zeppelin’s best ballad; it suggests a feeling of rain falling outside the window (Unterberger). This is important to setting the tone for the song which is hopeful, loving, understanding to the different stages of relationships and love. In an interview with Rolling Stone, Plant said this was his best Led Zeppelin vocal performance (songfacts). Meaning after decades of being a professional performer he feels this song was his best performance which explains why others have fallen in love with it. His ability to perform the song so well is the reason why it speaks to so many
