Secondly, geographic structure gives the organization the ability to hire people who are familiar with the local market (Ingram, n.d.). In Planned Parenthood’s case, this means that they are able to hire doctors and lawyers who are familiar with health care laws and practices in the area. Trusting some of these tasks to individuals at the “front lines” relieves some of the burden from top management. Similarly, patients will feel more comfortable when speaking to a fellow local who understands their language and cultural norms (Ingram, n.d.).
Finally, geographic organizations have the added benefit of simplified performance management (Ingram, n.d.). This benefit is not necessarily as applicable to Planned Parenthood because they are not aiming

This should not provide a major challenge due to Planned Parenthood’s significant global presence. Another suggestion to combat the challenges that Planned Parenthood faces as a geographically-dispersed organization is appointing highly skilled and experienced individuals as regional executives. This would still be consistent with the organization’s current geographic method but would involve one individual being responsible for providing guidance to several areas with similar laws and practices. Finally, a more radical suggestion would be to challenge the geographic structure and borders by increasing access to transportation and meetings of employees from different areas. This could include work exchanges/swaps, company-sponsored relocations or frequent conferences. While this would likely provide a high up-front cost, information-sharing about best practices is likely to increase operational efficiency and therefore bring in more revenue and/or cut costs. It is not a manufacturing company so terms such as small batch, mass production and continuous process technology do not really apply, but that does not mean that they are not affected by a need for technology. As they provide a variety of medical procedures they are in need of quality, reliable medical technology. This is heightened by the fact much of their resources go towards preventative medicine, including pregnancy prevention, screening for sexually transmitted diseases, cervical cancer screening (Goldschmidt & Strickland, 2017).
