"In the town they tell the story of the great pearl- how it was found and how it was lost again. They tell of Kino, the fisherman, and of his wife, Juana, and of the baby, Coyotio. And because the story has been told so often, it has taken root in every man's mind. And, as with all retold tales that are in people's hearts, there are only good and bad things and black and white things and good and evil things and no in- between anywhere.” The Pearl by John Steinbeck is a short hundred paged book that was published by Viking Press in 1947. It keeps the reader on the edge of their seat, desperately awaiting the outcome of Kino’s son. It all happened during the early 1900’s where there existed a separation between the poor and rich class in La Paz, on the Coast of the Baja Peninsula. The main characters of this book are Kino, his wife Juana, and their son Coyotio. When Coyotio gets bit by a scorpion, his parents, Kino and Juana, begin to worry because Kino and Juana can not afford to pay a doctor to treat their son’s venomous bite. But suddenly that all changes when Kino goes clam hunting and finds a grand pearl worth a lot …show more content…
The trackers shoot unknowingly, thinking the baby is a wolf, but end up shooting the baby. After the baby gets shot, Kino and his wife, still in shock, are wistfully walking home and stop at the shore of the ocean to get rid of the pearl once and for all. Kino throws the pearl in the ocean to rid themselves of the troubles it has caused them. “And then from above came little murmuring cry. The swear rolled in drops down Kino’s forehead. . . ‘If it’s a coyote, this will stop it,’ the watcher said as he raise the gun.
