The invasion of the Americas was a long drawn out process. It took many years for a successful attempt was made at colonizing the Americas. Starting with the Spanish and Cortes, in 1519, an attempt was made by the Spanish conquistadors to take over Tenochtitlan. The conquistadors were primarily around to steal money and goods and split it with the Spanish government. Cortes took along with him, eleven ships, five hundred men, and thirteen horses to the Yucatan try and conquer the Aztec empire. He also brought along around three thousand Nahuas, enemies of the Aztecs. Cortes was not successful in this attempt, however, small pox had been introduced to the Aztec by this time. Small pox completely ravaged the Aztec empire. After this, Cortes came back and dominated the Aztec empire. This would become an official war in 1756. It would become known as the Seven Years War. The war would rage on and the British would be overwhelmed. Just when it looked like they were done for, a turning point would happen. In late 1759, the British claimed a victory on the Plains of Abraham inevitably sealing a victory. Around a year later the French officially surrendered. This ended all conflict and significantly increased the British Empire. After the conclusion of the war, the British were in tremendous debt. In addition, the British had such a big empire that they had trouble controlling the entire empire. They had a war debt of 133 million by the end of the war. This caused a major need for funds. One way the British tried to fill this need was by taxing the colonists. This did not go over well for the British and it was met with hatred by the colonists. This would cause a major conflict and would spark the start of a new rule in the British owned Americas.
