Ulrich von Gradwitz and Georg Znaeym hated each other because of a feud. The feud was about a lawsuit in the days of their grandfathers. Scandals had damaged the relationship between the families for three generations. The lawsuit was because of a nasty dispute over a piece of land that was claimed by Ulrich’s family. Ulrich’s grandfather took legal ownership of the land from Georg’s family many years ago, but Georg’s family never accepted the Court’s decision. The conflict between these two families was that both of the men claimed the land to be theirs. The story starts with Ulrich searching the forest for a “human enemy” in other words he was searching for Georg, who usually hunted there, to kill him. What began as a legal conflict has become a personal conflict to the point that these two men abominate each other so much they wanted to kill each other. The feud might have died down between generations but these men wished the worst to one another. One night both men came face to face with each other, they stood glaring at one another for a long silent moment. You should let the past be the past and not let it interfere with the present or the future. For example, the feud between the families came from three generations before Ulrich and Georg, they shouldn’t have let what happened occurred. Meaning they shouldn’t let the feud that happened generations ago between their grandfathers affect how they were going to treat each other. They made new history when they decided to become friends because since the feud occurred the Gradwitz and the Znaeym were mortal enemies.
