The plot describes the story very well with the characters, rising action, climax, falling action and resolution. In the first story, “Two Friends” the main characters are M.Sauvage and M.Morisot. The rising action is when the Prussians showed up, the two friends stopped fishing and the Prussians pointed guns at them and asked them for the password. The climax is the two friends were killed by the Prussians because they didn’t say anything. The falling action is the two friends being thrown in the river by the Prussian guards and the officer. The resolution is the officer told the guards to take their fish and eat it. The characters for “The Interlopers” is Ulrich von Gradwitz and Georg Znaeym. The rising action is Ulrich von Gradwitz and his men search his enemy. They confront each other face to face, but the beech tree around which they have moved in opposite directions fails on them. Ulrich then attempts to reconcile with Georg and offer him some win. The climax is when Ulrich and Georg became friends. In the story it states “Lets shout for help….in this lull our voices may carry a little way.” This shows that Ulrich and Georg are not arguing anymore and they decide to call for help. The story is taken place from 1870-1871. Morissot and Sauvage run into each other in the city, but leave to go fishing. Maupassant’s peaceful descriptions of weather and landscape are set directly against descriptions of the war.These sets of peaceful and pleasant scenery descriptions serve as a counterpoint to the ongoing war, which regularly intrudes on what seems to be a peaceful outing. This is a significant period of war, and there is a lot of ongoing violence and threats from the attacking Germans and Prussians. The setting is also a “narrow strip of precipitous woodland” that the families of the two main characters have been conflicting over for several generations.
