The Korean War Veterans Memorial site represents the history of the war, gives people a place to reflect on the experiences the American soldiers faced on Ground in Korea, and allows us to remember the soldiers who sacrificed their lives for peace and freedom. The history behind any war should never be forgotten because it serves an importance between Americas past and present. “The war memorial, then, serves as a vital social link between the past, present, and future. The past is represented and interpreted through artistic and institutional lenses, and the lessons of war (whether glory or lament) are available to the public” (Collective Remembering Through the Materiality and Organization of War Memorials pg. 196). Generations to come will continue to learn about the Korean War because of the Korean War Veterans Memorial. The Korean War Veterans Memorial features a granite curb with a plaque inscribed with a list of the twenty two other nations who fought in the war or helped with aid relief. American troops fought this long, hard war alongside those nations, and without the effort of these nations there could have been more American casualties. There were millions of soldiers that were killed or presumed dead because they were never found. These soldiers are remembered today at this memorial by their name. There is an area of the memorial site dedicated to these soldiers called the honor roll. This wall consists of all the names of soldiers who were killed in battle. Also etched into the honor roll are soldiers who went missing in action, personal that were killed helping, and those soldiers who were captured and held prisoners of war. These men and women’s names will never be forgotten because of this area. According to an article called Collective Remembering Through The Materiality and Organization of war Memorials it states “Memorials emphasize themes of “honor”, “sacrifice”, “common good” imbuing the site with a redemptive quality and giving some form of meaning to the loss of life” (Zachery Beckstead, Gabriel Twose, Emily Levesque, and Julia Rizzo, pg.196).These soldiers’ lost their lives for a reason. Their loss of life had meaning to it. Their lives will continue to be honored for many generations to come. We will continue to remember their sacrifice of their own lives for our people’s peace and freedom through their images and names at the Korean War Veterans Memorial site.
