It seems as if everyone answered to the one manager, despite the presence of other group leaders. Often time’s people went directly to the manager rather than to the group leaders. Structure was such that group leaders received little to no respect and was simply bypassed when decisions needed to be made. Derue (2011), makes the statement that “highly intelligent and conscientious leaders, for example, will be especially adept at ensuring their followers have sufficient role clarity, structure, and goals to help facilitate task performance”. There were several new people and not only new, but young and they simply didn’t have the experience yet to hit the ground running in completing assigned tasks. Because the manager didn’t initiate training or even hold meetings to discuss areas of weaknesses within the teams, the result was inefficient performances from teams and individuals. This remained a constant source of problems for everyone trying to complete projects. There was no attention paid to individual performance and which hurt team performance. I am recommending that the manager add this trait. Adding a vision, would create a hope and goal for the teams. It would also mean that structure and strategies be implemented, monitoring of progress be established, leading to finding ways to measure individual performance and merit increases or bonus, thus bolstering the entire department. Kirkpatrick (1991), "The core job of a leader, however, is to create a vision - a concept of what the organization should be". (p. 56) Motivation is another key area of leadership that is missing from the organization. Having a staid emotion is good for stability, but lack of motivating the teams and individuals to perform well is missing. Kirkpatrick (1991), "Leaders cannot achieve the vision alone; they must stimulate others to work for it too". (p. 57) Adding motivation would give a since that management really cares not only about the department and its direction, but about each individuals contributions to meeting project
