A common problem for freshman is the much-talked “freshman fifteen”. This is a phenomenon where college freshman gain weight during the first year of school due to both physical and psychological issues that arise during that time. However, according to Grabmeier at Ohio State University research showed those students actually gain between 2.5 and 3.5 pounds during freshman year (Zagorsky). Many go too far and become preoccupied by the phenomenon that it can become unhealthy. Researchers Smith-Jackson and Reel found that women believe that weight gain is inevitable and can cause much anxiety and even eating disorders. This is unfortunate and maybe could be a reason why stress is high during freshmen year. During college, so many things come up that many are left feeling emotionally exhausted by everything. In one study it showed that only 51.9 percent out of 200,000 freshmen said that they were emotionally happy (Higher Education Research Institute). Based on this finding, it gives way to the logic that students are not adjusting and are not finding proper techniques to succeed in the new environments and stress associated with it because good mental health habits are not being made. When stressed, people experience, mainly digestive symptoms, while others have headaches, sleeplessness, depressed mood, anger and irritability (NIH).
Sense this is shown as evidence of the effects of negative emotions it is in the best interest for the student to take control of both mind and situations. These findings show that not being disciplined in college can fall short in more ways than one. There is hope and there are options out for help if mental issues interfere too much with college and or personal life. Treatment for mental health problems varies depending on the individual and could include medication, therapy, or both things (MentalHealth).
