However, birds do use verbal communication with songs and calls, according to text 3, “Bird Calls and Songs.” This communication is different because humans have a more complex verbal communication. Among hundreds of species (as their are numerous different species of birds and types of bacteria), humans are different in the way they communicate.
Language is also different from communication. It is argued that language does not make humans different because chimpanzees have a similar non-verbal form of communication and there are many examples of animals learning various gestures, words, and their meaning after being taught by humans. “Chimpanzee Communication,” text 5, expresses that, “[chimpanzees’] calls, postures, and gestures, together, add up to a… complex and sophisticated method.” Chimpanzees have a similar non-verbal communication to humans with their variety of meaningful movements. However, humans have a deeper complexity. According to text 8, “The Flexibility of the Human Language,” “chances are you would fail to find an exact repetition [of any one sentence] no matter how long you continue to search.” This expresses the many forms language can take. The amount of words in the human language can be used to form innumerable thoughts. The language allows, with its flexibility, for individuality. Because humans can express themselves with the possible shapes of language, they do. The difference in the ideas expressed by language and leads to new cultures and perspectives. It is because of these new and differing perspectives that ideas can be improved upon and changed. This leads to creativity that no other species had as well as collective learning. According to David Christian, a notable historian, “Collective learning is what makes us different. It is an entirely new and much more rapid way of “adapting” to our environment. While other species adapt through the slow, patient, sharing of genes, we adapt by sharing ideas.” In other words, collective learning allows humans to evolve at a much faster rate than all the other species. This evolution is accessible only because of
