As I read The House on Mango Street, I discovered a few symbols. Such as the “Shoe” which could symbolize becoming a woman or embarrassment. Another symbol was the “Tree” which symbolized Esperanza; the book said that the trees didn’t belong in the neighborhood and that is how Esperanza felt. I also found some themes in the story. There was family, Esperanza didn’t feel close to her family, which might have been the reason why she felt worthless. There was also identity, this showed how Esperanza didn’t feel confident about herself. The main character in this book was Esperanza. As I read The Color of Water, I discovered a few symbols. Such as "Black Power" which referred to the civil rights movements. Another symbol was "Ruth's bicycle" this meant movement and relaxation. I also found some themes in the story. There was community, there was two communities. One of them was Ruth Jewish family who disowned her. There was also a black community, though they weren't Ruth's family they were the ones that helped Ruth out. The major characters in this story were Ruth and James. Ruth was James mother and mother of eleven more kids. She was an Jewish immigrant. She decided to stay with her miserable past because she was afraid of how it would be to not live in her past and live in her present. James was the narrator in this book. He experienced confusion after his step-dad past away. He thought the solution for this would be found in smoking and drinking.
